1886 The Hen Egg With Sapphire Pendant

Maria Feodorovna

Purchase price: 2,986 rubles.

The Empress was so impressed with the Easter present of 1885 that the Emperor Alexander III opted to renew his commission with Carl Faberge. Regrettably, all that we now know about this egg comes from the description in the invoice presented by Faberge to the Emperor: “Hen of gold and brilliant diamonds, picking a sapphire egg out of a wicker basket.” In 1917 the Egg was moved from the Anichkov Palace to the Kremlin Armory. In all likelihood, it was sold abroad by the Soviet government during their sell-off of Imperial treasures in the 1920s. It is currently one of the six missing Imperial Easter eggs.

Whereabouts currently unknown.
